Ruben Mehrabyan: Armenia appears to have contracted AIDS (video)
How to combine comparable with incomparable in Armenia’s foreign police, i.e. how to develop the country’s relations with NATO, taking into account the commitments that Armenia has undertaken under the new CSTO agreement?
Sergey Minasyan, Deputy Director of the Caucasus Institute, an expert on military and security issues, says there are problems which cannot be resolved in the foreseeable future as Armenia cannot become a member of NATO in the near future.
“As for the CSTO, I must say that the peculiarity of this structure for Armenia is that it becomes a canopy which contains Armenian-Russian strategic relations,” he said.
Gevorg Melikyan, an expert at the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs (AIISA), says the CSTO is a repeat of Russia's foreign policy and coincides with the Russian doctrine. “This has its dangers. No one can guarantee that Russia will not drag Armenia into the conflicts in which it is involved.” The expert says there is no ground for Armenia to refuse Russia in the given circumstances.
“Armenia appears to have contracted AIDS, that is, when you open the door of a fridge you catch pneumonia. They may set a demand to remove embassies,” said political analyst Ruben Mehrabyan.
Experts believe that the answer to these questions should not be expected from Russia or NATO. Armenia will be treated the way it presents itself.
