Lars motor way on the Russia-Georgia border is a way of life for Armenia, and its closure affects the country’s economy, says Karen Chilingaryan, Chairman of the Consumer Advisory Center NGO. “Now, they are hiring ferries but it is an expensive pleasure and they cannot solve the problem in that way. It will lead to the rise in the prices of products, and consumers will suffer as a result,” he said today. Karen Chilingaryan says some companies have already benefited from this situation. Russia's primary carrier and largest airline, Aeroflot, has raised fares after the closure of Lars. “Most people have no alternative. In fact, the Russian company is violating the rights of Armenian consumers,” he said. In reply to A1+’s question whether the closure of the Upper Lars checkpoint would not affect the exporting companies, Mr Chilingaryan said, “Surely, it will because ferries cannot transport a lot of products. Besides, the prices of these products will be much higher and our products cannot compete in the market.”
