On June 2, the German Bundestag is to discuss a resolution condemning the century-old Ottoman massacre of Armenians by describing it as genocide. Ruben Melkonyan, an expert in Turkish studies, says the resolution is not likely to be passed by the Bundestag. “The German Bundestag has 630 members which complicates the discussion of the resolution. In addition, it is obvious that the real political interests prevail over morality,” he said. The expert says Germany has a very strong Turkish community that might also hinder the adoption of the resolution. Many of them have German citizenship and are employed in different spheres. “The relations between Turkey and Germany have deep roots and this resolution can worsen these relations,” Melkonyan said adding that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide has become a matter of political bargaining.
