U.S. Ambassador to Armenia: President Obama made a very strong and powerful address this year (video)
U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard M. Mills, accompanied by Embassy representatives, visited the Tsitsernakaberd memorial in Yerevan. They laid flowers and stood in silence by its Eternal Flame, paying their respects to some 1.5 million Armenians massacred by the Ottoman Turks. Talking to reporters, Ambassador Mills said a great tragedy occurred decades ago and they share that grief with Armenians. In reply to a journalist’s observation that U.S. President Barack Obama again refused to call the 1915 events a genocide breaking his 2008 campaign promise, the U.S. diplomat said, “I think President Obama made a very strong and powerful address this year and he made it clear that the United States is ready to assist restoration of peace [in the region].” In reply to A1+’s question that Mr Obama simply does not want to spoil relations with Turkey, therefore he refrained from calling the Ottoman-era Armenian massacres genocide, Richard Mills said, “I think decisive steps should be taken for a lasting peace in the region. This was stated by the U.S. Presdent in his speech. We are ready to assist the sides in resolving the conflict in a peaceful way.”
