'Zhengyalov Hats' for soldiers guarding border outposts
Before reaching the village of Aknaberd in Martakert district of Karabakh, I met a group group of children running through the fields near Sarsang Reservoir, Armenian journalist Edik Baghdasaryan writes on his Facebook page.
“We got out of the car and went to talk to them.
“What are you doing here,” I asked them.
“We are picking up zhengyal to bake bread with it,” a girl said.
“Why? You already have so much of it?” I asked.
“We shall send it to our soldiers guarding our oppositions,” said the same girl.
Bread with zhengyal, best known as “Zhengyalov Hats,” is one of the traditional dishes of Karabakh cuisine. This is Armenian flatbread, a specialty of Artsakh, lavash-dough stuffed with about 20 local greens. The herbs stuffed in the bread are called “Jengyal”, hence the name of the dish.
