Weak seismicity activated in Armenia (video)
Several minor quakes have been registered in the northern regions of the country this month but this should not cause panic among the people, Hrachya Petrosyan, head of the National Seismic Protection Service at the Ministry of Emergency Situations, said on March 30. He presented statistical data for 2014 and 2015, according to which 270 earthquakes occurred in Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in 2014. A total of 193 earthquakes were registered in 2015. “There were 65 seismic shocks in the first quarter of this year as compared with the 52 and 49 jolts registered in the same periods of 2014 and 2015. Summing up these figures, we can say that the weak seismicity has activated. A period of activation is natural after a relatively quiet period, and there is no reason for panic. Hrachya Petrosyan added that there is no threat of powerful earthquake in 2016.
