Armenia’s Foreign Office welcomes the liberation of the Palmyra archeological site in Syria. “World cultural heritage must be preserved,” the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on March 28. Syria's state news agency, SANA, reported last week that the Syrian army, backed by forces loyal to the government, recaptured major parts of the historic and strategic city of Palmyra after heavy clashes with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters. ISIL took full control of Syria's ancient city of Palmyra in May 2015. The fall of the city potentially opened the way for ISIL to advance towards key government-held areas, including the capital and Homs.
