Activist Gevorg Safaryan to stay in custody for another 45 days
A court in Yerevan has upheld the motion of the investigative body to extend the detention of civil activist Gevorg Safaryan for another 45 days. The Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan’s Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun districts also rejected a defense motion to release Safaryan on bail. “The investigator did not have any grounds to request extension of pre-trial detention. He says they studied a video of the incident that took place on Liberty Square on New Year's Eve and saw someone kicking a policeman. They need to identify that person who is not Safaryan,” lawyer Tigran Hayrapetyan told A1+. Gevorg Safaryan was detained during clashes between police and demonstrators at Liberty Square on New Year’s Eve. He was immediately charged with using violence against a government representative and was placed under two-month custody. He has been in custody since December 31.
