Prosecutor did not confirm indictment against Gevorg Safaryan
The prosecutor did not confirm the indictment drawn up by a SIS investigator against jailed civil activist Gevorg Safaryan. The case was remitted for reconsideration, a representative of the Office of the Prosecutor General told A1+. Investigation into the case of the civil activist was completed several days ago and was forwarded to the prosecutor who was to confirm the indictment. Gevorg Safaryan was detained during clashes between police and demonstrators in Yerevan’s Liberty Square on New Year’s Eve. On December 31, the police refused to allow opposition New Armenia activists to install a Christmas tree there. Safaryan and four more activists were detained by the police, but later all of them, except Safaryan, were released. The latter was placed under two-month custody. Then the court decided to extend his detention for another month.
