Minister sees prerequisites for reduction in gas prices (video)
Armenia’s Minister of Economy Karen Chshmarityan today dispelled allegations about his possible resignation. “I do not possess such information,” he told media on January 20. The minister said the Armenian government had requested the Russian side to reduce the prices of gas. “The prices of energy carriers are of great significance for our economy.I think, our economic entities, especially those who use natural gas, will make a mistake if they decide not to take advantage of this opportunity,” he said adding that there are prerequisites for the reduction in gas prices otherwise they would not have turned to Russia. In reply to the question whether Armenia will refuse to receive gas from Russia and start cooperation with Iran, if we receive a refusal from Russia, Karen Chshmarityan said, “These are topics for negotiations. They are both our partners. New opportunities are opening up for Armenia with the lifting of sanctions on Iran. This can be extra oxygen for our economy.” Answering A1+’s question, whether Armenia is likely to resume the construction of a hydropower plant in Meghri after the lifting of sanctions against Iran, the minister said, “I think we shall be able to implement many projects with Iran, including the construction of Meghri hydropower plant. Once sanctions are lifted the chances of implementing unfinished projects become greater.”
