Before tendering resignation Armenian Ombudsman sent letter to Chief of Armenian Police (video)
Before his resignation on Monday, January 18, Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan addressed a letter to Chief of the Armenian Police Vladimir Gasparyan asking him to explain the lawfulness of police actions and violence used against activists at Liberty Square on New Year’s Eve. A number of activists affiliated with the New Armenia Public Salvation Front were arrested on December 31 as they attempted to place a Christmas tree in Yerevan’s Liberty Square. All detained activists, except Gevorg Safaryan, were set free later in the same day. Safaryan was charged with assaulting and injuring a senior police officer, Gegham Khachatryan, and was placed under pre-trial arrest for two months.
