Turkologist: Results of Turkey elections are stunning
The results of the parliamentary elections in Turkey are stunning, Turkologist Hakob Chakryan said on Monday. With most of the votes now counted, Erdogan’s Justice and Development party (AKP) is said to have won almost 50% of the November 1 vote leaving behind its three main rival parties. Mr Chakryan says even the international press did not expect such a result: many consider the elections as a sensation. The specialist does not predict significant changes in Turkey after the vote. “All problems that existed in the country before the election, including the Kurdish issue and the conflict with the West, will remain unsolved,” he said. Mr Chakryan also says that Erdogan is likely to be re-elected as the country’s president if a referendum is held in the country. “Erdogan's supporters are people with low IQ who are not interested in freedom of speech, human rights protection and other issues. Their only concern is that Islam be taught in schools and their daughters go to school with hijabs (headscarves) and Erdogan fulfils their wishes,” he said. Nor does Mr Chakryan expect any breakthrough in Armenian-Turkish relations after the parliamentary elections in Turkish. “Turkey has so many problems to solve that it is not interested in its relations with Armenia. On the other hand, the problem with Armenia is considered a national issue in Turkey which is to be resolved at the state level and has nothing to do with the change of government,” he said. The three Armenian candidates running in the Turkish elections were elected to parliament.
