Republican lawmaker considers constitutional amendments ‘a revolution from above’

Transition to a parliamentary model of government is a necessity but the draft constitution has serious drawbacks and gives rise to concerns. It is a raw version which has a number of ridiculous articles. One of these absurd articles states that in order to be called a mother a woman should have a baby,” said Hayk Martirosyan, PhD in Political Science. Republican lawmaker Artak Davtyan considers the constitutional amendments to be ‘a revolution from above.’ “What we propose our citizens is a package ensuring a modern state with the rule of law,” he said. He says even the Armenian Revolutionary Federation – Dashnaktsutyun supports the constitutional amendments and seconds the switch to a parliamentary system. Hayk Martirosyan said the reason may lie in Dashnaktsutyun’s intention to take portfolios in the next government. He added that a new clan system will be formed which will be even worse than the previous one. The Republican MP reminds that everything will be clear after the constitutional referendum slated for December 6 but the years of independence have shown that there is no alternative to a parliamentary system of government.
