Prosecutor General comments on activist's decision to seek asylum in Azerbaijan

Many do not realize the price of independence. Of course, 'If we look back into our history, we can see there have always been traitors, and we all know how they ended up, Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan said at Yerablur Pantheon on Monday speaking about Vahan Martirosyan, the Armenian activist who crossed the border and asked for a political asylum in neighboring Azerbaijan. How could Martirosyan cross the border if a criminal case was filed against him? “The criminal case was opened before he fled to Azerbaijan. Then charges were filed against him and the measure of restraint against Martirosyan was replaced by recognizance not to leave the area, which means he could not be put under arrest at once. We have numerous other cases when there are not enough grounds for detention but we cannot keep a person in custody for fear that he might be involved in treachery Gevorg Kostanyan says now they need to find out whether the investigation body took Martirosyan’s passport or not. “A person may not encounter any obstacle on the border if arrest has not be chosen as a preventive measure for him,” he stressed. “What punishment awaits Martirosyan if he decides to return to Armenia?” In reply to A1+’s question, the Prosecutor General said, “The criminal case will follow the usual order.”
