Edmon Marukyan: Who are the members of NO movement? (video)
Opposition lawmaker Gagik Jhangiryan says the draft constitutional amendments cannot be boycotted; people can only say “Yes” or “No” to the package. “In 2005, [former president] Robert Kocharyan laid a big mine under the Constitution,” he says. Edmon Marukyan is one of the few lawmakers who did not meet with Serzh Sargsyan to discuss the proposed amendments. However, it does not mean that the MP is going to say “No” to the draft constitution. “What does the so-called “NO” movement do? Who are its members?” Edmon Marukyan learnt from press reports that several movements are campaigning against the draft amendments but he cannot understand their ultimate desire. “Some want a change of power, others think if the referendum is thwarted, the authorities will change in the country,” the independent lawmaker said. Mr Marukyan wants to understand who is going ‘to overthrow’ and why. “I am in favor of a change of power but through elections, therefore I am preparing for next elections,” he said. The lawmaker does not approve a change of power through revolutions and says all coup attempts have failed so far. “Therefore it is useless to make those failed attempts a topic of discussion again.” The Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) said in summer it does not support the “NO” movement. Vahe Enfiajyan says there is no need to start a sharp confrontation over the constitutional amendments. “We should create a suitable environment for people to express their opinion,” he said adding that he is going to say ‘Yes’ to the amendments.
