Shootings and tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border renew from time to time. “I fear that if the tense situation continues a bit longer, it will be difficult to stop. But the resumption of active hostilities is impossible,” says political analyst Alexander Iskandaryan. When asked what prevents Azerbaijan from restarting the war, the expert said, “The quality and quantity of arms make Azerbaijan show some restraint. In fact, Azerbaijan has zero chances to win the war. But if a war breaks out, it last only 5-10 days. Azerbaijan can cause great damage to Armenia but it cannot win us. The war will be stopped by the international community. Likewise, Baku will suffer great losses, up to the threat of overthrow of the regime.” But the Karabakh conflict is advantageous to Azerbaijan for a number of reasons. One of them is that the leadership blames the poverty in the country on the ongoing conflict. The political analyst says the ‘design’ changes very rapidly in the region, meaning the change of relations between Iran and the West, the hostilities in Turkey, the advancement of Islamist rebels in Syria. Speaking about the upcoming meeting between Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Mr Iskandaryan said Sargsyan has a lot of things to discuss with the Russian leader.
