The preliminary investigation into the case against the five members of the Founding Parliament movement – Zhirayr Sefilyan, Pavel Manukyan, Garegik Chukaszyan, Varuzhan Avetisyan and Gevorg Safaryan – has not been completed yet. The five leading members of the opposition group were arrested on April 7 on suspicion of planning to stir up ‘mass disturbances’ at the sites of genocide centenary commemorations on April 24. The arrested oppositionists deny the charges and consider that the government is persecuting them for their political views. “I do not know how stupid they can be. If they are too stupid they will not drop the charges and the case will be heard in court, the trial will turn into a clownery. But if they have brain, they will discontinue the case. Everything depends on the level of stupidity of the acting regime,” Gevorg Safaryan told A1+. He says the investigation body has not even summoned him for questioning.
