Chief of the Armenian Police Vladimir Gasparyan today visited Bagramyan Avenue where citizens have been staging a protest against rising electricity prices for the fifth day. Activists offered Mr gasparyan to have breakfast with them by the official refused. Protesters then asked Gasparyan to explain the reasons for his resentment on the previous day. The chief of the Armenian Police said it was conditioned by the closure of Mashtots Avenue [by activists] and detection of armed and drunk people in the group. “Through a protest action people usually present their social demands and our role is to understand and protect our citizens, but we cannot tolerate when they violate a law. Police have a philosophical approach to all this; people are raising their concern. Do you imagine what might happen when an adventurous person decides to throw a stone at a police officer? Then the entire mechanism will be put into action,” Mr Gasparyan said. The protests were sparked by the decision of the public regulator to raise the current electricity prices by about 7 drams from August 1, 2015. Details are available in the video.
