Clash in Liberty Square: Young man threatens to smash activists' technique (video)
Members of the civil initiative ‘No to plunder’ campaigning against the rise in electricity prices have been holding a sit-in protest in Yerevan’s Liberty Square since Friday evening. Today a young man came up to the protesters and threatened to smash the activists’ technique, since the sound of the music, he said, was disturbing him. Clash broke out between the activists and the man which also involved police officers. Last week, the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) partially satisfied the request of the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) deciding to raise the electricity tariff by 6.93 drams. Two days later, the civil initiative organized a rally in Liberty Square which was followed by a sitting strike against the proposed tariffs which will come into effect starting August 1. The activists have the Armenian authorities until Monday evening to revoke the decision and denounce the electricity price hike saying that otherwise they would organize a march towards the Presidential Palace.
