Yerevan offers assistance to flood-Hit Tbilisi

Yerevan has offered its assistance to Georgia in eliminating the consequences of the devastating floods in Tbilisi. “A group from Yerevan Zoo has left for Georgia to render necessary help to their partners in Tbilisi. Also, the Yerevan Municipality is ready to give asylum to the animals of Tbilisi zoo,” Spokesman for the Yerevan Municipality Artur Gevorgyan told A1+. Heavy flooding in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, has killed at least 12 people, with officials warning people to stay indoors to avoid animals that have escaped from a zoo. The flooding began n the early morning hours of Sunday, when heavy rains caused the River Vere – normally little more than a stream – to burst its banks. Thousands of people have been left without water and electricity while others have had to be airlifted to safety. Tigers, lions, wolves and bears are feared to be still on the loose in Tbilisi amid chaotic scenes. Water filled subways, basements and first floors of hundreds of homes. Dozens of people have been left homeless. Rescue workers are searching submerged homes to check for trapped residents. Sixteen people are reported missing. A day of mourning has been announced for Monday. Four Armenians were killed as a result of heavy flooding in Tbilisi. The victims are citizens of Georgia and are identified as Zhanna Yeghiazarova, Svetlana Yeghiazarova and Liana Yeghiazarova, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
