Armenians cannot achieve universal recognition of the Armenian Genocide and implementation of their claims even if they work assiduously for several decades, said famous Armenian statesman Karen Demirchyan. He always said that the new government must continue the work of their predecessors. During his tenure in office [as Armenian parliament speaker], Karen Demirchyan did everything that was possible to do in the Soviet era, Demirchyan’s widow says. Demirchyan was trying to find a common language with Moscow. Unfortunately, he did not have great success as the upper echelons of the USSR did not want to spoil or strain relations with Turkey. April 24 was not declared Day of Remembrance but Soviet authorities began to use the word ‘genocide’ thanks to Demirtchyan. Even newspapers wrote articles using the word in the titles. Few speak about Karen Demirtchyan’s efforts and contribution today. Rima Demirtchyan is not offended by the indifference. The facts speak for themselves, she says.
