In a statement issued on April 24, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey shares the pain of the Armenian people in connection with the tragic events of 1915. Erdoğan expressed his condolences to the "children and grandchildren of Ottoman Armenians who lost their lives during the WWI.” The statement was read out by Turkey’s Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkir at a mass at Surp Asdvadzadzin Patriarchal Church in Istanbul as part of events commemorating the Armenian Genocide victims in Turkey. "We know about the sad events experienced by the Ottoman Armenians in the past and we sincerely share your pain. I want you to know - our hearts are open to all descendants of Ottoman Armenians,” Erdoğan said in the statement.
