Prominent Armenian politician Karen Demirchyan dreamt to have a thriving and prosperous country. He could realize his dream but for the parliamentary carnage of October 27, 1999. “One thing is clear. On that day the assassins had one definite aim, they wanted to destroy the system of checks and balances that did not allow them to rob people and build the pyramid of corruption,” says Levon Zurabyan, Head of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) faction. Karen Demirchyan, one of the most influential political figures in Armenia would turn 83 today. Demirchyan’s relatives and friends, political figures and ordinary citizens today visited Komitas Pantheon on the occasion of his birthday. Those gathered at the Pantheon believe that those who masterminded the 1999 parliamentary carnage will be disclosed and punished after a change of government. “I cannot say that it will happen in the near future because the acting authorities are on good terms with their predecessors. I cannot give definite names as long as the crime is not revealed, but I can assure you that the perpetrators will be disclosed one day,” said HAK lawmaker Lyudmila Sargsyan.
