Aragats Akhoyan, a former member of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), says he is not acquainted with the planned constitutional reform, hence he cannot express his opinion on the package. The lawmaker has met Serzh Sargsyan on several occasions and even talked to him. He is very tolerant, especially towards those oppositionists who label him. “Our authorities are very tolerant. Had the same expressions been said in one of our neighbouring countries, they would have exiled the author.” Mr Akhoyan says people should respect Serzh Sargsyan regardless of the fact whether that man is a legitimate president or not. “He has been in office for several years and it is meaningless to speak about his legitimacy today.” To our observation that Serzh Sargsyan, who is seen as a symbol of respect, overtly insulted former leader of the BHK [Gagik Tsarukyan] by using his nickname, Mr Akhoyan said the issue is not ‘a topic for discussion.’ “He [Serzh Sargsyan] is the head of the country, and I think it is up to him to decide which words and phrases to use in his speech.” Aragats Akhoyan is pleased with the level of democracy in Armenia. He says collegial decisions are made even inside the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK). However, he [Serzh Sargsyan] made the decision about Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union alone. “He [Sargsyan] could not consider everyone’s opinion in one night. Who knows under which circumstances he made the decision? Maybe there were problems threatening the country’s security?”
