Appeals Court upholds verdict against Shant Harutyunyan

The Court of Appeal has left unchanged the verdict against the leader of the Tseghakron party, Shant Harutyunyan and his friends. On October 19, a court in Yerevan found Shant Harutyunyan, leader of the radical opposition party, his underage son Shahen Harutyunyan and ten other activists who also participated in the November 5, 2013 anti-government protest, guilty of acts of hooliganism and sentenced them from 1 to 7 years in prison. The court sentenced Shant Harutyunyan and his son to 6 and 4 years in prison, respectively. Today court session was attended by Heritage Party Leader Raffi Hovannisian who stood with his back to court throughout the hearing.  After the Court pronounced its verdict, Mr Hovannisian said, “The verdict is against the Republic of Armenia” and left the courtroom. Before the trial, Mr Hovannisan said he considered Shant Harutyunyan and his friends to be political prisoners and called for Serzh Sargsyan’s immediate resignation.
