Tension continues on different parts of the Line of Contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan. Armenian forward units repelled another infiltration attempt by Azerbaijani forces overnight. Two Armenians and three Azeris were killed in the result of the encounter near the military positions of [Berd in Tavush region]. A number of servicemen were injured. “The recent developments are more than reconnaissance and sabotage attempts. I cannot say what plans the enemy has but there is some panic and I believe that something is maturing,” says Ruben Hakobyan, head of the opposition Heritage faction in the Armenian National Assembly. In recent days, Azerbaijan has intensified attacks on Armenia’s borders. On the night of January 23, Azerbaijani armed forces fired in the direction of Voskepar-Baghanis section of Armenia-Georgia highway. Official reports about the attacks were available only in the morning. Meanwhile, on Wednesday the Defence Ministry of Armenia said in a statement that unlike the Azerbaijani side, Armenia will continue its open, transparent and impartial information policy and be accountable to the society for all achievements and, more importantly, for oversights. Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Eduard Sharmazanov says, “Theoretically, as long as we have not signed a final peace agreement and as long as the Azerbaijani leadership sees military actions as the solution to the conflict, our society must realize that our major task is to ensure the security of our borders.” Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan earlier announced that he did not think that the regular subversive attacks can lead to large-scale military operations.
