Two policemen remain in a Gyumri hospital following yesterday’s clashes between protesters and riot police, Aravot.am reports. One of the policemen received closed craniocerebral trauma, blunt abdominal trauma and an open brain injury. The other policeman, who was rushed to Sourb Grigor Lusavorich medical centre, underwent surgery late on Thursday. Both of them are said to be in satisfactory condition. The director of the hospital says 24 people were injured in the clashes, including 14 policemen and 10 civilians. Large crowds of protesters gathered outside the Russian military base in Gyumri on Thursday where Valery Permyakov, the Russian soldier who is said to have killed six people in Gyumri on January 12, is now being held. The protesters demanded that Permyakov be handed over to Armenian law-enforcement. Security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades and used truncheons to stop protesters from approaching the Russian Consulate in Gyumri. The protesters responded with a hail of stones thrown at several rows of riot police. About 20 people were hospitalized with serious injuries sustained during the clashes. Most of them were discharged later in the evening.
