The Armenian Police have issued a statement saying several citizens were taken to police stations from Yerevan’s Liberty Square on Thursday where they had gathered for what they claimed to be a spontaneous rally to follow the developments in Gyumri. Two of the detainees had handguns with them. The police then cite the provision of the Constitution which empowers law enforcement agencies to suspend a gathering in case there is a direct threat to the constitutional rights of citizens. “A public event attended by armed people is not suuported by the Constitution and the laws regardless of any motivation and legitimacy to carry weapons, and they cannot be tolerated given the possible extremely grave consequences,” the police said in the statement.
