Ambassador: Russia will punish those responsible for Gyumri tragedy
On January 12, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan received Russian’s Ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin. Both men expressed their deep concerns over the brutal murder of a family in Armenia’s Gyumri city. The Russian Ambassador expressed his condolences in connection with the deadly incident and said the Russian side is interested in the soonest disclosure of the tragedy and punishment of guilty people. He stressed that the leadership of the Russian military base in Gyumri is closely cooperating with law-enforcement authorities in Armenia and assisting in the investigation of the case. A Russian soldier stationed at the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri is suspected of murdering six people in Gyumri earlier on Monday. The only survivor of the massacre is a six-month-old child who sustained knife injuries. The child is now in hospital and is said to be in serious condition. Police are now searching for the Russian soldier identified as Valeri Permyakov and are calling on Gyumri residents to report any sightings of the suspect. Those killed have been identified as Seryezha Avetisyan, Hasmik Avetisyan, Aida Avetisyan, Armen Avetisyan, Araksya Poghosyan and and Hasmik Avetisyan (two years old).
