Ombudsman condemns attack against opposition lawmaker

It was with pity that I learnt about the assault on Armenian lawmaker Aram Manukyan, Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan wrote on his Facebook account on Thursday evening.

"A little while ago I had a telephone conversation with the leader of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) faction Levon Zurabyan, who told me the details of the incident. Zurabyan was at Aram Manukyan’s house. The representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office will also visit the site of the attack. I shall inform people about our future steps on Friday, December 12,” said Mr Andreasyan.

An unknown person attacked HAK Secretary Aram Manukyan and hit him near the lawmaker’s house in Yerevan on Thursday evening.S peaking about the incident, Levon Zurabyan said there is an available video tape which had already been confiscated.

Aram Manukyan is said to have bruises on his face. He declines to comment on the assault at present.

The assailant is described as a middle-aged man who reportedly did not say anything during the attack.
