Seven employees of the newly opened department of the Armenian Police have been sent to Washington to get acquainted with the local experience in the fight against domestic violence, to develop skills and follow the examples of their US and European colleagues, US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern said today during a press conference dedicated to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The Ambassador highlighted cooperation between police, courts and prosecutors, as well as NGOs and international organizations, at the same time emphasizing the need of law. “In this field, Armenia has work to do,” said Mr Heffern. Perchuhi Kajoyan, a member of the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women, said the hotline calls have increased by 600 as compared with 2012. It seems that citizens are beginning to realize that it is better to protect their rights than domestic violence incidents, she said.
