Aram Manukyan meets with Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan over March 1 tragedy (video)
The tragedy of March 1, 2008, will not be disclosed until the authorities are changed in Armenia, says opposition lawmaker Aram Manukyan. Together with the parents of the ten victims, Mr Manukyan today met with Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan. Mass protests against alleged electoral fraud on March 1, 2008, resulted in the death of ten people. The protests were organized by supporters of presidential candidate and first President of the Republic of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan in the wake of the Armenian presidential election of 19 February 2008. On March 1, 2008, after nine days of peaceful protests at the Opera Square, police and military forces dispersed the protesters who remained overnight, beating them with truncheons and electric-shock devices. The clashes between the riot police and demonstrators left 10 people dead and hundreds injured in central Yerevan.
