Artsakh territory will be cleared of mines (video)
With the financing of U.S. Agency of International Development, the project of clearing mines left after Nagorno Karabakh war continues. Agency’s Armenian Chairman Karen Hilliard informs in the movie “Karabakh: peaceful life near the ghosts of war” that clearing work has been carried out in 251 fields since 2000 with their support, due to which it became possible to launch agricultural work in 27000 ha territory. “During the first years following the war, 35-40 people died annually because of mines’ explosions, 345 death cases have been registered since 1995, 1/3 of whom are children. Now 5 cases are registered annually, which is also a large number for us. According to the estimations, at this moment only 5 percent of mined areas remain hazardous. These are mountainous or wooded areas, clearing of which demands huge efforts, but I think that within the frames of 5 million dollars’ funding provided to our partner Halo Trust, all the territory will have been cleared of mines until 2016,”- announced Hilliard.
