Lawmakers in Armenia continue debates on the bill on granting tax and customs privileges to a government-proposed international school to be built in the resort town of Dilijan.

During today's National Assembly sitting, NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan expressed surprise at the MPs' reaction to the Dilijan International School.

"It seems that the companies wishing to make investments have lined up... If the government says it is a profitable project, we have to discuss it," said Abrahamyan.
He urged following the example of Georgia where the authorities are giving investors areas in the heart of the capital free of charge. "After all the school will create new workplaces and attract funds for the community's budget. If God grant more investors turn up, we shall sit down to discuss and consider the best opinion. We need to grant tax privileges to investors," stressed Abrahamyan.

Republican MP Samvel Farmanyan presented the advantages of the project, saying the annual expenses will total $ 20 mln, $17 mln of which will be spent on the development of Dilijan.

In July 2011, the project of constructing an international school in Dilijan was granted permission. he project authors explained that the main idea of founding such a school is part of Armenia-2020 project and is meant to contribute to Armenia's "development and prosperity".
The school is planned to open its doors in September of 2013.
