Barev Yerevan: PAP will stay alone in City Council
Members of the Barev Yerevan alliance in the Yerevan Municipality did not attend Yerevan Mayor's inauguration on Tuesday as a sign of protest against last month's ‘fraudulent' municipal elections.
"We cannot recognize the legitimacy of the election, during which we filed hundreds of reports about violations with the Police," said Stepan Safaryan, a secretary of the opposition Heritage party, one of the six representatives of Barev Yerevan alliance in the City Council. He says they decided to fill their seats in the council in order to make people's voice audible to the municipal authorities.
"As we received six mandates from our voters, we will now do everything within our powers to make our citizens' voice heard," he said.
For her part, Anahit Bakhshyan said they are going to submit their findings about illegalities to relevant commissions. She is especially concerned about the problems encountered in kindergartens. "N1 kindergarten has been closed for two years for the simple reason that it would be repaired. Another kindergarten has been privatized, with the owner renting the building to the authorities to use it as a polling station during elections," she said.
Davit Sanasaryan, another member of the group, stressed that they sought the people's vote of confidence in order to enforce decisions reflecting their will.
Speaking about the demeanour of the Prosperous Armenia Party in the City Council, the group members said it is evident that PAP will stay alone in the council.
Barev Yerevan alliance has six representatives in the 65-seat City Council - Armen Martirosyan, Anahit Bakhshyan, Stepan Safaryan, Gagik Baghdasaryan, Arthur Gasparyan and Davit Sanasaryan.
