Minister refrains from commenting on Syunik shooting
Armenia's Culture Minister Hasmik Poghosyan is hopeful that the criminal case filed in connection with the June 1 shout-out outside the house of former governor of Syunik province, will reveal the real criminals.
"I expect a fair trial in the case. Everyone, including the government, authorities and public, expects a fair verdict," Hasmik Poghosyan told A1+.
The minister could not say whether the deadly shooting was resulted by the atmosphere of impunity or not.
"Different things happen in different countries but it is in Armenia that similar incidents find deep public resonance and clamour. The reason is that Armenia is a small country and news spreads very quickly in our country," she said.
Asked whether the governor's acts do not smear the Republican party, the minister said, "I cannot draw a conclusion on behalf of the Republican party."
The Armenian government decided today to relieve Surik Khachatryan from the post of Syunik Governor in accordance with his resignation paper submitted earlier this week.
The move comes following public clamour over a June 1 shoot-out near Khachatryan's house in Goris that left a former mayoral candidate dead and his brother wounded.
