Nairi Hunanyan in normal health condition
Spokesperson for the Penitentiary Department at the Ministry of Justice dismisses the allegations that Nairi Hunanyan, the person who led the armed attack on the Armenian Parliament on October 27, 1999, has mental problems.
"I do not know who stands behind these false rumours and what aim they pursue. I can say that Hunanyan has not been visited by doctors for a long time and he is in normal health condition," said Gor Ghlechyan.
On October 27, 1999, a group of gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan stormed the parliament building, killing Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Parliament Speaker Karen Demirchyan and 5 other high-ranking officials. After the killings, the gunmen announced they were staging a coup d'état and claimed that they wanted to punish "corrupt officials." The gunmen surrendered to the authorities in the morning of October 28 and freed about 40 hostages after they were allowed to speak on the national television and were promised a fair trial and safe passage by negotiations with the then President Robert Kocharyan. Nairi Hunanyan and the five gunmen were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
