The parliamentary group of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) has issued a statement, reiterating its commitment to disclose the post-election clashes of March 1, 2008, that left at least ten people killed in Armenia.

"The pro-government majority in the National Assembly illegally and arbitrarily rejected ANC's proposal to create an ad hoc committee to investigate the killings on March 1, 2008.

The 48 votes cast in favor of the proposal to create a commission to investigate the March 2008 bloody events is an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of the National Assembly since 1999. On the one hand, it speaks of the deep public resonance; on the other hand, it shows that there is a real possibility for the opposition to unite against the authorities.

The voting and the preceding discussions showed that there are two definite poles in view of the investigation of the March 1 crime, there are two poles. On the one side, there is the whole political field, civil movements and initiatives that believe that Armenia will remain at an impasse as long as the tragic events of March 2008 are not disclosed. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia and Orinats Yerkir Party are on the other pole. Led by Serzh Sargsyan they are doing their best to impede the investigation of the crime.

As usual, ANC finds it their main political task to probe into the clashes and punish all those responsible for the crime. To achieve this goal, the ANC will use all political, legal and propaganda levers both in Armenia and beyond its boundaries," reads the statement.
