The Council of Elders of Yerevan does not work effectively, says Yerevan's former chief artist Haghtanak Shahumyan.
Although his friends in the City Council see the numerous problems in the capital, none of them speaks about them.

"They fully realize that the problems will not be resolved," he said.

Both Shahumyan and singer-songwriter Lilit Pipoyan blame the distortion of Yerevan's historic Pak Shuka (Indoor Market) on the indifference of the Council of Elders.

"The demolition of Yerevan's well-known and beloved market still remains a mystery for us which shows the fictitious nature of the Council of Elders. The legislation should clearly define that after buying a historic building the buyer has not right to change it," said Lilit Pipoyan.

Haghtanak Shahumyan was delighted to see that the cafes in the neighbourhood of the Opera House are being demolished.
"However, I was disappointed to learn that stone-walled cafes will be built in their place," he said.
