Chairman of the Armenian Central Election Commission, Tigran Mukuchyan, today refrained from assessing the arrest of presidential candidate Vardan Sedrakyan.

"There is a judicial act and we should respect it," he said.

Mukuchyan said that the CEC is already working on the petition of another presidential candidate, Raffi Hovannisian, who is disputing the official results of the Feb. 18 vote in the Constitutional Court.

"The Constitutional Court will convene a sitting during which we shall present our views and legal position on the appeal," said the CEC chairman.

The Central Election Commission today convened an extraordinary sitting to discuss the application of Europe in Law Association. The NGO recorded numerous violations in the Feb. 18 ballot, which, it said, hampered the conduct of free and fair election.

"The application referred to separate cases in some ten polling stations and should not be generalized," said the CEC chairman.

Mr Mukuchyan reminded that 1988 polling stations and 41electoral districts operated across the country on Election Day.

"Of course, we are concerned with election-related violations and problems observed in one polling station," he said.

The seven members of the Central Election Commission unanimously voted against the NGO's application.
