Environmental activist taken to police department
Environmental activist Eghia Nersisyan is currently in a police car en route to Vedi city in Ararat province.
Talking to A1+ Eghia Nersisyan said police officers were taking him to a court in Vedi as a witness in a high-profile poaching case.
"At the suggestion of my lawyer, I did not attend the first court session," said Eghia Nersisyan.
In September 2012 during a visit to the territory of the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, environmental activists found remains of killed animals listed in the Red Book of endangered species, in particular a Bezoar goat and a Caucasian bear, as well as traces of bonfires, household waste, including empty vodka bottles, after apparent barbecue parties.
Following the report, the police started a probe into the case.
In October, 2012, the police arrested a resident of Garni, 29-year-old Norik Sargsyan, who was charged with illegal hunting in the territory of the reserve. Shortly afterwards, the Khosrov Reserve civic initiative issued a statement, saying that Sargsyan had nothing to do with the crime and that the police had picked the wrong man.
