Every third woman is subjected to violence
Women's Rights Center (WRC) has drafted a bill on Domestic Violence that will be submitted to the government before December 10, WRC Chairperson Susanna Vardanyan told reporters on Monday.
There were objections to the adoption of the law, because there was already a law on violence.
"There is a big difference between violence outside the home (against friends or neighbors) and domestic violence. These two types of violence should be clearly distinguished," she said.
Susanna Vardanyan says the adoption of the law should not be viewed as medicine or remedy to cure violence. However, it will curb and reduce cases of violence.
She says every third woman is subjected to violence.
"The study conducted by the Center in 2007 shows that 39 percent of women are subjected to physical violence, 5% - to sexual violence and the rest to psychological violence."
Susanna Vardanyan says that more and more women are applying to the WRC: the reason is not that violence has escalated in the society; women simply have become more informed.
