European Parliament President recommends Turkey to face history
The President of the European Parliament called on Turkey to recognise the Armenian Genocide considering the recognition to be a major prerequisite for Turkey's accession to the European Union.
Martin Schulz underlined the clear position of the European Parliament expressed in a resolution adopted in 1987.
The President of the European Parliament made the announcement during a meeting with Egemen Bagis, Turkish Minister for the EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator, the Voice of America reports.
The officials discussed the role of Turkey in Syria, the visa regime and the prospective for Turkish membership in EU. Bagis and Schulz also referred to the Armenian Genocide and the new bill adopted by the French Senate.
During the press conference in the European Parliament, Bagis refused to answer a question about the statement of the EP President, as well as his remarks denying the Armenian Genocide.
