Sheep meat prices go down in Armenia
September is the time when Armenians celebrate Khachveraz or Surb Khach (‘The Holy Cross'). On this day the Armenian people, who revere the memory of their ancestors, go to the cemetery, and have a funeral feast. The main dish at the feast is lamb. Compared with the previous year, the price for lamb has gone down, totaling AMD 2200-2500 per kilo. (Earlier, a kilo of lamb was sold at AMD 4500).
"The decrease in price is due to the fact that Persians are buying fewer sheep nowadays," said a butcher in Armavir marz.
Tigran Iboyan, who has 150 sheep, says the main problem is to feed the sheep and sell the meat. He regrets that Iranians do not buy so many sheep today.
Sheep breeders face a major problem at this time of the year. The sooner they sell the sheep, the better for them, as after returning for pastures sheep lose weight.
