"I ask you to be lenient towards me," member of Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) Armen Matevosyan, who had distributed electoral bribes, said today in his speech in the general jurisdiction court of Yerevan's Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun administrative districts, addressing Judge Artur Mkrtchyan. He accepted his guilt.

According to the prosecution, before the elections the mentioned BHK member gave a bribe of 10,000 drams to Yerevan resident Tsovinar Kostanyan, a bribe of 35,000 drams to Heriknaz Jivanyan, and bribes of 15,000 and 35,000 drams to Hambartsum Nazaryan and Hakob Asatryan respectively, forcing them and their family members to vote for BHK in the May 6 parliamentary elections, thus impeding the free expression of will by voters.

Only two of the four witnesses to have received bribes attended the court hearing. Seeing that the two other witnesses were absent, they did not allow reporters to take their photos and videos. One of the witnesses declined to answer our questions during the break. In his speech, the prosecutor suggested sentencing Armen Matevosyan to 3 years in jail, but it was decided to apply a 3-year probation as punishment.
