UN Human Rights Committee considers Armenia's reports
In its 105th session held in Geneva, Switzerland, the UN Human Rights Committee discussed the 2nd and 3rd periodic reports of Armenia regarding the implementation of the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The Armenian delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ashot Hovakimyan, included representatives of the RA Foreign Ministry, Justice Ministry, Office of Prosecutor General, Court of Appeals and police.
While presenting the report, Ashot Hovakimyan said significant steps had been taken over the past years to bring the legislation of Armenia fully in line with its international obligations. The judicial reform package aimed to implement the principle of the independence of the judiciary, adoption of enabling legislation, institutional transformation and measures to prepare and train staff.
Subsequently, the delegation responded to the questions posed by the Committee members. The discussion of the report will be followed by the adoption of the Committee's conclusions and proposals.
In Geneva, Armenia's Deputy FM also met with new president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, and new executive secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Sven Alkalaj.
During the meeting with the ICRC President, Hovakimyan dwelt on the cooperation between Armenia and the Red Cross, underlining ICRC's role in the region.
The UNECE Executive Secretary and Armenian Deputy FM underlined the importance of Armenia's collaboration with the Commission, and discussed the implementation of international treaties by Armenia within the framework of the UN.
