There is a serious skepticism about the May 6 parliamentary elections in Armenia, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern said on Monday during an event marking the 20th anniversary of Armenia-U.S. relations.

"Some have preemptively declared the May elections fraudulent, calling now for protests the day after the polls. But those who want to build democracy in Armenia, cannot stop with statements about what "they" should do. Instead, Armenians should do their part to build institutional networks and coalitions to make their voices heard and to establish mechanisms that deter fraud and hold government accountable," said the U.S. Ambassador.

During the meeting, a student asked what the USA could do to prevent election fraud.

"It is not our country, it is your country, hence we can do nothing to prevent election fraud. But we can find partners in different spheres and work with them, demand relevant bodies to observe laws. it is important that voters present their complaints and statement in order to pressurize local authorities. we are eager to partner with you but you should be the ones who will can guarantee the conduct of free and fair elections in your country," Mr Heffern replied.

When asked to assess their cooperation with the three presidents of Armenia, the U.S. Ambassador said, "I think our relationship is getting better day by day."
