AIM not to run for parliament
The Union for Self-Determination (AIM) will not run in the upcoming parliamentary elections, AIM Leader Paruyr Hayrikyan said on March 7.
"As a political force, AIM lacks sufficient support from public, which would allow us to run for parliament. We do not have the required practical, public support in which case the call to run in the elections would have been justified," said Mr Hayrikyan.
Still in February, the party announced that they expected to take at least 20 mandates in parliament. The AIM leader says the statement stirred up a wave of enthusiasm which, however, quickly died away, making them give up the intention of participating in the elections.
The party is also against nominating candidates by the majoritarian system.
"If we are against the majoritarian electoral system, if we consider it a violation of human rights, why should participate in single-mandate elections?"said Mr Hayrikyan.
At the same time, the AIM leader did not exclude that his teammates could be included on the proportional tickets of other parties, conveying them the spirit and practice of the AIM.
In conclusion, Mr Hayrikyan reminded his party's efforts to undermine the Soviet Empire.
