Authorities in Armenia continue to roughly violate human rights, Head of Helsinki Association in Armenia Mikael Danielyan said on February 22.

Today the human rights activist presented the organization's report portraying the human rights situation in Armenia. The author of the report says human rights are largely violated by domestic structures, specifically by the police, Prosecutor's Office and departments adjacent to the Ministry of Justice.

In reply to A1+ whether the forthcoming parliamentary elections will be accompanied by human rights violations, Mr Danielyan said he does not expect positive changes as long during the tenure of office of the acting authorities. Moreover, he expects large-scale bribery and election fraud during the elections since the authorities cannot maintain power by other mechanism.

The human rights activist is surprised at Justice Minister's statement that Armenian prisons are in good condition.

"I think Hrayr Tovmasyan [Justice Minister] does not live in Armenia and is unaware of the country's living conditions since the bill [on legal regime of the state of emergency] which the minister submitted to the National Assembly shows that the minister is completely ignorant of the country's constitution," said the Head of Helsinki Association.

Mikael Danielyan states that corruption is deeply rooted in all structures. "They appointed Koryun Piloyan, the father of corruption, as head of Anti-corruption Department," he said.

"As long as people act as obedient slaves and do not fight for their rights, they will not be respected or appreciated by the authorities," he concluded.
