Hayk Gevorgyan released

Hayk Gevorgyan, a leading journalist of opposition Haykakan Zhamanak daily, was released from Nubarashen penitentiary a couple of minutes ago. Hayk's relatives, friends and supporters all gathered outside the penitentiary institution to meet the outspoken journalist.

By a court decision, the precautionary measure against Hayk Gevorgyan was changed earlier today.

"Studying the case material, the prosecutor in the case revealed that Gevorgyan was accused under Articles 1 (part 1) and 244 of the Armenian Criminal Code. He was indicted for breaking traffic rules and fleeing the scene of an accident thereby causing minor harm to a person. Detention was chosen as preventive measure against Hayk Gevorgyan on January 23, 2012 and he was subsequently declared wanted by the police. On February 3, 2012Gevorgyan was discovered and taken to custody. Taking into consideration the deep public resonance, the prosecutor made a decision on February 6 to change Gevorgyan's restraint by release under a written cognizance not to leave the city," reads the statement issued by the Office of General Prosecutor.
